BALTIMORE – Emily McDermott, account supervisor with PR and strategic communications firm Van Eperen, is the recipient of the Paul E. Welsh Award from the Public Relations Society of America Maryland Chapter.
The award is presented annually to a PR practitioner with at least 10 years in the profession whose work embraces and exemplifies Paul Welsh’s talent for developing and implementing creative and effective solutions to the most challenging issues in public relations.
Welsh was an innovator in what was still a very new field. In 1939, when he was just 26 years old, he created the slogan, “Maryland – America in Miniature.”
In his extensive, eclectic and distinguished career, Welsh covered aviation for The Baltimore Sun, worked in military intelligence during WWII, and managed public affairs for many years at the McCormick Company. He was public relations director for the Orioles from 1955 until 1957.
The award was presented to McDermott during a special ceremony at the PRSA Maryland chapter’s annual “Best in Maryland” awards gala on Dec. 4, 2019.
McDermott, left in photo, joined Van Eperen in 2017 and has been instrumental in the success of the agency and its Baltimore office where she is based and oversees some of the PR firm’s largest accounts. More recently, she has been tapped to take on an important operations role for the entire organization, including the office and personnel in the agency’s Rockville headquarters.
“Whether it’s for client work or on behalf of Van Eperen agency initiatives, ethical considerations are always at the forefront of Emily’s deliberations and decision-making processes,” said Jeffrey A. Davis, APR, managing partner and head of the Baltimore office. “Her standards are high and reflective of the values Paul Welsh was known for.”
Outside of Van Eperen and PRSA, McDermott gives back to the Baltimore community, including her volunteer work with Thread, whose mission is to end social isolation by building a more equitable culture in which everyone thrives.
