Steve Jobs once said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do”. I used to think this notion was absolute baloney. You’re not supposed to love work! That’s why they call it work. However, I’m pleased to tell you I was completely wrong. Since starting my internship at Van Eperen, my affinity for public relations has grown more than I ever thought it could.
Starting my first day at Van Eperen, I assumed, like the interns in the movies, I would spend most of my time making copies, running errands, answering the front desk phone, and of course, making coffee. I never expected to become part of a team where I was given real client work and an opportunity to make a difference on a daily basis. I often joke, “I’ve learned more here in three months than I did in three years of college!”
Not only has working at Van Eperen allowed me to work under industry professionals wise beyond their years, it has provided the opportunity to work with an array of clients. At this agency, every day is a new challenge to look forward to. Before walking in to the office at 9 a.m., I never know if I am going to be writing a press release, calling media outlets, drafting weekly updates, or any other task my team trusted me with. I never felt like the work I was doing was “just something to keep the intern busy.”
This summer has come and gone in the blink of an eye. Most days, I looked at the clock and was shocked to see it was already time to go home. Thank you to everyone who helped me grow professionally these past three months! Van Eperen has instilled in me a love for public relations that I will carry with me throughout my career.
